African seed institution changes its name to mark major renewal
Abidjan, 18 August 2014 – During the Governing Board Meeting of the African Seed Network (ASN) held in Abidjan on 13 and 14 August with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Commission of the African Union, an important decision has been taken: the name of this unique pan-African seed specialized institution was changed to “AfricaSeeds”.
Following the restructuration of the institution based on its revised mandate and the new challenges faced in the seed sector development in Africa today, the Governing Board found it also necessary to reflect these changes in the name of the institution itself.
The former name suggested the sole function of networking for which ASN has been mandated since its creation in 1998. Members of the Governing Board unanimously identified “AfricaSeeds” as the most appropriate name for the institution now mandated by the African Union to coordinate and lead in the implementation of AU’s continental seed programme in addition to its regular network function. The Governing Board has authorized the new name, AfricaSeeds, for immediate use and widespread popularization.
